  Collaboration

AHEC has a long-standing policy and history of complementing and supporting local health departments (LDH).  AHEC appreciates the opportunity to identify areas in which we can best complement and supplement LHD flu prevention and other local health efforts in a coordinated statewide approach to minimize the possibility of pandemic flu in Texas.

Having previously collaborated with the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) on various health initiatives, e.g., with Connie Berry, Texas Primary Care Office, on rural health initiatives through the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and with Bruce Gunn on the Primary Care Survey to identify workforce needs of rural providers, AHEC welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with DSHS on the Pandemic Influenza Preparedness Initiative.

HEALTH LITERACY

We foster healthy behavior development in individuals, groups, and communities by promoting those programs designed to educate and encourage adoption of  healthy lifestyle practices. We offer information and hands-on activities for many topics such as emergency skills, proper brushing and dental hygiene, proper dietary choices for those with diabetes, cancer awareness and detection techniques, tobacco cessation, what to do about domestic violence, and we have recently joined the National Institutes of Mental Health as an outreach partner to further expand our role in mental health education.

Contact your AHEC regional center for more specific information regarding activities in your area.
